Ohio: Squire's Castle & a Frozen Lake

Winter in Ohio is a love/hate relationship.

I love it for its beauty, the unsaturated world it becomes. A blanket of fresh snow, landscapes that alter, and the challenges it brings as a photographer. NE Ohio was slammed this year with snow. Personally, I had to deal with 20+ inches in my family's driveway, with the rig and the truck. The goal was to be on the road before winter hit Ohio or had to deal with it, unfortunately, some life events have delayed my travels til spring.

Making the best of the situation, I wanted to try and capture some aspects of Winter in Ohio.

On this trip, I head to a Castle on the Hill and a frozen lake. Feargus B. Squire an executive with the Standard Oil Company built the gatehouse in the late 1890s in a Romanesque Revival style. It was constructed of Euclid bluestone, leaded glass and originally had a ground floor, two upper floors, and a basement. Now called - Squire's Castle - it was heavily damaged over the years, with vandals removing the leaded glass windows and stripping the interior of almost all architectural and decorative details. Somewhat restored in 1995 the castle is now a part of the Cleveland MetroParks.
